Everything was within easy reach. The history of Rataje’s housing estates

Everything was within easy reach. The history of Rataje’s housing estates

Grand opening: 10 July 2026 at 6.30pm.

10.07.2026 - 28.02.2027

2026 marks 60 years since the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of one of the largest urban projects of the post-war Poznan – the Rataje district. The exhibition tells Rataje’s story from the perspective of the architects’ vision as well as the everyday life of its inhabitants. We focus on the times of the Polish People’s Republic when the majority of Rataje’s estates were built.

What influenced the design of the new district? Were all the initial objectives of the urban planners achieved?

What did the process of the construction of the estates and organising life in the former rural areas look like? What did the everyday life of the inhabitants of the newly-built estates look like? What are their memories from moving in? Where did they do the shopping? How did they spend their free time?

We present Rataje as a space which, on the one hand, was meticulously planned, and on the other hand, was gradually domesticated by those who made it their home.

The exhibition was designed with various groups of visitors in mind – those who remember the beginnings of Rataje’s estates as well as those who will discover their history for the first time. Apart from archival photographs, memories and historical materials, you will also find here interactive challenges and activities designed for children.

Join us for the grand opening on Friday 10 July 2026 at 6.30pm.

The event will be translated into Polish Sign Language.

The exhibition is available in two languages: Polish and English.

Free entry to both the exhibition and the opening event
