Exercise 7

Glacial obstacle course

Be like Sven and create your own glacial landscape!

At home, you can use items you already own to create a glacial obstacle course: pillows can be glacial erratics, blankets ca be ribbon lakes and other things can be river valleys and terminal moraine hills.

Perhaps you’d like to make your landscape more diverse? Meet some of the landforms made by Sven with the help of meltwater: eskers, kame and outwash plaines.

Terminal moraine hills

Bear in mind that the Continental Glacier formed them in front of himself. They can make up a whole chain of hills placed next to one another.

Ribbon lake

Troughs were made under the moving ice. Therefore, they should be placed perpendicularly to the moraine hills. You can add several lakes or one which is very long.

River valley

It was formed already after Sven finished his activity. It was created by a river which weaved between the elements shaped by the Continental Glacier. In Poznań the river cuts the chain of moraine hills in half. Where will your river flow?

Eskers

These are long, narrow and often wavy hills.

You can place them next to the ribbon lake or in some other place. Bear in mind that they should be placed perpendicularly to the terminal moraine.

How were they made?

These are the remnants of the rivers flowing inside the Continental Glacier. Just like in the case of every river, sand, gravel as well as small and large rocks deposited at the bottom of these rivers. When the Continental Glacier disappeared, the rivers disappeared too, but the sediment which settled in them stayed. It settled on the area where the river had flowed before and created long, wavy hills.

Glacial erratic

The Continental Glacier left behind rocks in various places. You can place them wherever you like in your landscape.

Kame

It is a rather small hill. You can place it wherever you like in your landscape. In Poznań such hills can be found, for example, in the area of the New ZOO.

How was it made?

When the Continental Glacier began to retreat, small cracks appeared within it. Particles of sand and other materials fell into them, just like sand falls into a mould. The difference is, however, that this “mould” was made of ice and eventually melted. What was left was the sand, which formed a hill.

Outwash plain

It is a large, flat and slightly sloping terrain. It is formed in front of the terminal moraine hills. It can also be found at the end of the tunnel valley.

How was it made?

When the Continental Glacier was melting, huge amounts of water were flowing out of it. These carried a lot of small material, which settled slowly on the area where the water flowed. Over time, large, flat surfaces were formed out of this sediment.
