Exercise 5
Walk with a glacial erratic
Glacial erratics are very large rocks which can be found in different places. Sometimes they can be even several metres tall! For a long time, people have been using them as a building material or as a base for securing commemorative plaques. Where did they come from? They were brought by Sven the Continental Glacier from faraway Sweden! He could transport them over the distance of even several hundred kilometres.
Find out if you too could move a glacial erratic
Look at the ball in front of you. See how far you can carry it or roll it.
Going one way along the mat = the rock moved 5 metres
Going 36 times along the mat = the rock moved from the Śluza Gallery to the cathedral (180 m)
Sven’s results:
Moving a rock from Ystad to Poznań – 400 km => going 80 000 times along the mat
Moving a rock from Stockholm to Poznań – 800 km => going 160 000 times along the mat
