When there was something he could not do alone, he was helped by meltwater. It had wonderful abilities of its own. It flowed under huge pressure inside the continental glacier and transported large amounts of material; it could even carry large rocks.

It was faster than mountain rivers.

When it flowed from the continental glacier it created huge rivers. These carried large amounts of sand and gravel, which they used to bury huge areas of land.

Far in the south, many kilometres away from the glacial dome, it shaped deep proglacial stream valleys. These were several hundreds of kilometres long and up to twenty kilometres wide. Meltwater would flow through these proglacial valleys, travelling to the west.
