SETTLERS

To found a medieval city you need:
land – that is some space for people,
people – who live and work in this land,
law – that is knowledge about how to live and work in order to create together a well-functioning society.

In 1253 all that dukes Przemysł I and Bolesław the Pious really had was the first of these ingredients – the land. The second and the third one presented a huge challenge. There were not enough local people to populate a city and nobody living here had any skills allowing them to do so.

This is when the settlers came to help.

Where did they come from?
What did they have to offer to the rulers and their subjects?
What did they get in exchange for their help?
