Bronek is ill all the time. He struggles with recurrent infections. Luckily, check-ups, which all children at school receive, eliminate tuberculosis, which poses one of the greatest health hazards immediately after the war. However, it turns out that the child is very weak, underweight and suffers from anaemia. In the meantime, Jadwiga stumbles across a newspaper advert concerning enrolment for a camp for children suffering from poor health. The woman quickly goes to the office indicated in the advertisement and enrols her son for the camp. It is uncertain where it will take place. Just in case, Jadwiga already prepares all the things he might need there.

Jadwiga manages to purchase a fair supply of fabric. She also buys a sewing machine, advertised in Głos Wielkopolski. With the help of her daughter Janina, she begins to sew and mend clothes for the whole family.

From time to time, Jadwiga and Zenon go out with their children to listen to the radio. They gather with their neighbours under a speaker in Głogowska Street, which is used for broadcasting. The radio station broadcasts announcements and music, which mainly comes from surviving gramophone records, although from time to time there are also live musical performances.
