On 4 September 1945 a new school year began. Despite improvements in organisation, the working and learning conditions were still difficult. There was a shortage of teachers, equipment and teaching materials. Many school buildings were still waiting to be renovated. At the same time, teachers struggled with acute living problems, including low salaries.
That first year, 1945/1946, the classes were combined so the first and second grades were together, [then] the second and third, and the third and fourth, and during one school year you would do a two-year programme. Here, in Krzyżowniki, I was teaching the second and third grade so we taught everything because the level was still so (low) that you could do that.

Those were different times. You had to start everything from scratch: create teaching aids, draw maps and teach all of this to students. Well, I can proudly say that I was one of the first teachers in Poznań who built a geographical garden. Not just at the school I taught at but also in several others.

Poem titled Demolished school by Zofia Stein – a student of Dąbrówka Secondary in Poznań, 1947, from the collection of the 7th Dąbrówka Secondary School in Poznań.
Niebo jest tutaj dachem,
Wiatr tutaj tylko chodzi,
Piętra były piętrami, a my byliśmy młodzi.
W tej bramie stał stary woźny
Już dwie minuty po dzwonku:
Mam rozkaz, by was zatrzymać, ja was nauczę porządku
Patrzył na prawo i lewo,
Czy mu to ujdzie bezkarnie –
„To raz ostatni, pamiętać!” – I wpuszczał całą dzieciarnię.
Ostatnie przeszły tą bramą
Gruz i kamienie.
***
Mur stary „fui, fuisti” odmiana po łacinie –
A wiele z nas poznało śmierci prawdziwe imię.
Powstanie wkrótce z gruzów i moja stara szkoła.
By podziękować.
I was shocked by the terrible conditions in which teachers are living and working. A headmaster, after 42 years of working, gets 900 zlotys, including all bonuses, a teacher gets a maximum of 600 zlotys. How could this system, which attaches so much importance to upbringing, have turned teachers and pedagogues into such pariahs? These people work from morning till night, denied even the satisfaction that they can teach according to their conscience. After all, before the war, Jane Smith who reached a high level of professional development earned 750 zlotys a month, which is an equivalent of today’s 7,000 zlotys. Today teachers’ salaries are lower than the lowest wages earned before the war by an unskilled worker.
