Karolina Wojtas
photographs from the Abzgram series

Karolina Wojtas’s works are marked by a distinct aesthetic and a humorous approach to photography. They address a theme that has fascinated the artist for years: the school as a place for formation of social relations, but also a place from which the inhabitants often wish to escape. Her method of working with children and young people typically involves restaging previously witnessed scenes of violence, games, or shared jokes. The artist’s attention is also drawn to disturbing juxtapositions of school devices. For the purposes of her photographs, she often creates new compositions of such devices or parodies of instructional assistance, for example in teaching writing. The world captured by Karolina Wojtas is highly ambiguous, violence is accompanied by laughter, and good fun is observed by someone who may quickly restore discipline.
