Family matter

Then Patrycja’s dad Zbigniew also became a hairdresser. It was at that time that the name of the salon was changed into ‘Saga’ to emphasize the family tradition. Patrycja and her brother Krzysztof are its continuators. The siblings ran the salon together for 18 years. Now it is run by Patrycja alone.

Even though for a long time only men became master hairdressers, the whole family was engaged in the business. This is what Patrycja says about the women in her family:

‘My great-grandmother Stanisława used to help her husband at work. When he was gone, she had to take matters into her own hands. Before that, she had only been a wife. My grandma Lusia, the wife of my grandad Leon, also worked there. She answered the phone, made appointments with customers, worked the cash register, kept the accounts. She would always bring some juice or tea for students. So she was helping her husband as well.’

Will the family tradition continue?

‘[My daughter] is 12 years old so it is hard to say. I tell her this: think about something else. No one has ever suggested I should become a hairdresser neither. My grandad was forced to do it by the circumstances. Only my dad wanted this. Neither me nor Krzysztof wanted to be hairdressers. We chose different paths. No one suggested hairdressing. They even showed us the downsides of this job.’
